Don't start with that Curtis stuff, Toby. I don't have any flow and I don't want to start with a lie! And rappers wear clothes that I don't like. You're trying to hurt me, I'm sure of it. Now can we focus on Ariana Grande?

Well, the first thing that struck me is that I find that the verses on this track - and this is also the case for her whole latest album Eternal Sunshine actually - reconnect a bit more with the style of Ariana Grande's early songs, which leaves more room for her exceptional voice. She goes back a bit more to pop to move away from the hip-hop that she explored more with "thank u, next" (we agree that this track is more hip-hop, Toby?). I also don't know of many pop songs with such a success (+1 billion streams on Spotify) that have such a long intro, but it sets the mood. For the subliminal message and the cry from the heart, I'm happy to talk about them, but it's not the first thing that struck me, so Toby, I'll kindly let you answer me.

After analyzing the video and the lyrics, it seems clear to me that this is a message addressed to her detractors. It's a fed up but also a pretty sharp criticism. The video, in summary, is a panel of doubtful critics who enter a kind of empty garage. Ariana will then appear and perform with dancers. She will literally say "yes, and?" to these critics. In my opinion the whole message is "Yes I do this or that in my personal life, and?" or "Yes I made this comment on social media, and?", but obviously said like that, the haters would strike again. So Ariana chose to be a little more subtle. And I mean a little.

However, in the video, despite this affirmation of her personality in front of this panel of doubtful journalists, they become completely fan of the song. Has Ariana Grande gone crazy and does she think her songs are the best? Obviously not, given her warm thanks at every stage of her success. It's more to highlight the pure madness of journalists and haters on social networks: instead of ignoring her and having a normal reaction, by this misplaced criticism / hatred, they implicitly acknowledge that Ariana Grande has a crazy success and even that some appreciate her titles while acting like scum - because going to look for details of personal life and criticizing them in a people "magazine" is an invitation for haters to strike and make money on it is ugly.

It's not a provocation. You have to put these pseudo-elites in their place without alienating them. Obviously the message has to be ambiguous: otherwise it would never have been broadcasted and it would have given the impression that Ariana was being bitter.

Also, this song needs to speak to her fans and the public, so there must be a double message. A useful message, not a self-centered one - that would be boring! The second reading, the one at face value, is an invitation to let your personality shine through in the face of adversity and to avoid letting jerks dictate your behavior. Singing about your self-confidence when you lack it, to empower yourself to succeed, in short. That speaks to a lot of people.

But Ariana pulled off a little trick by getting two messages across that ultimately concern her: she too struggles with self-confidence and is trying to motivate herself. Evidence of Ariana's lack of confidence? Deleting her old X / Twitter account is generally a sign that you can't or don't want to face the daily criticism you can read there anymore. When you're solid, you don't need to do that. And you don't need to sing about it either.

Unfortunately, will her message be heard by her detractors? I doubt it. But it's still good to hear a different perspective.

Daring? Sure, but if she had done that, this would be her last album and it would never have seen the light of day. 😂 If you target certain people too hard, even with an international career, it can be reduced to dust in an instant. I think she knows that.

You're right though, it is paradoxical, but it's also a necessity because giving away your weaknesses directly is also exposing yourself too much. And besides, this is Ariana Grande, activism isn't her goal. I already appreciate what she's been able to do.

Absolutely, it's a mantra, but Hakuna Matata is a brilliant song that puts a smile back on your face and it's an important step in Simba's life for his final battle. So Ariana is already taking a first step, and maybe she's on Simba's trail to face Scar, who knows 😉

It's such a mantra that one verse of the song is sung almost in a whisper, as if we could hear an inner voice. She even asks "Why do you care so much who I ride? [at night]", in other words why is there an article about every man she meets? These rather explicit lyrics were hidden in this verse so that it wouldn't be awkward to listen to. If at first I found it daring, on reflection it's quite well played.

Alors la première chose qui m'a frappé, c'est que je trouve que les couplets ce titre - et c'est aussi le cas de tout son dernier album Eternal Sunshine en fait - renoue un peu plus avec le style des premières chansons d'Ariana Grande, qui laisse plus de place à sa voix exceptionnelle. Elle revient un peu plus dans la pop pour s'éloigner du hip-hop qu'elle a plus exploré avec "thank u, next" (on est bien d'accord que c'est plus hip-hop ce titre, Toby ?). Je connais aussi pas tant de chansons pop avec un tel succès (+ d'un milliard d'écoute sur Spotify) qui ont une intro aussi longue, mais elle met dans l'ambiance. Pour le message subliminal et le cri du cœur, je veux bien en parler, néanmoins ce n'est pas la première chose qui m'a frappé, donc Toby, je te laisse gentiment l'opportunité de me répondre.

Ce n'est pas une provocation. Il faut mettre ces pseudo élites à leur place sans les aliéner. Évidemment que le message doit être ambigu : sinon il n'aurait jamais pu être diffusé et cela aurait donné l'impression qu'Ariana faisait preuve d'amertume.

Et puis, aussi, cette chanson doit parler à ses fans et au public donc un double message doit apparaître. Un message utile et non pas autocentré – quel ennui ça serait sinon ! La deuxième lecture, celle au premier degré, c'est une invitation à faire parler sa personnalité face à l'adversité et éviter de se faire dicter son comportement par des sans-gêne. Chanter sa confiance en soi quand on en manque, afin de se donner les moyens de réussir, en somme. Ça parle à beaucoup de gens.

Mais Ariana a réussi un petit tour de force en faisant passer 2 messages qui la concernent finalement : elle aussi, la confiance en soi, ça n'est pas son truc et elle essaie de se motiver. Une preuve du manque de confiance d'Ariana ? La suppression de son ancien compte X / Twitter, c'est généralement un signe que l'on ne peut pas ou que l'on ne veut plus affronter directement les critiques quotidiennes que l'on peut y lire. Quand on est solide, on n'a pas besoin de faire ça. Et on n'a pas besoin de le chanter non plus.

Malheureusement, est-ce que son message sera entendu par ses détracteurs ? J'en doute. Mais ça fait quand même du bien d'entendre un son de cloche différent. 

Après l'analyse du clip et des paroles, il me semble évident que c'est un message adressé à ses détracteurs. Un ras-le-bol mais aussi une critique assez aiguisée. Le clip, en résumé, c'est un panel de critiques dubitatifs qui entrent dans un espèce de garage vide. Ariana va ensuite apparaître et mener sa performance avec des danseurs. Elle va littéralement dire "oui, et alors ?" (yes, and?) à ces critiques. À mon avis le message au complet c'est "Oui je fais tel ou tel truc dans ma vie personnelle, et alors ?" ou "Oui j'ai fait tel commentaire sur les réseaux sociaux, et alors ?", mais évidemment dit comme ça, les haters en rajouteraient une couche. Donc Ariana a choisi d'être un peu plus subtile. Et je dis bien un peu.

Néanmoins, dans le clip, malgré cette affirmation de sa personnalité face à ce panel de journalistes susceptibles, ces derniers deviennent complètement fan de la chanson. Est-ce que Ariana Grande serait devenue dingue et elle croit que ses chansons sont les meilleures ? Évidemment que non, au vu de ses remerciements chaleureux à chaque étape de son succès. C'est plus pour souligner la pure folie des journalistes et des haters des réseaux sociaux : au lieu de l'ignorer et avoir une réaction normale, par cette critique / haine déplacée, ils reconnaissent implicitement qu'Ariana Grande a un succès dingue et même que certains apprécient ses titres tout en agissant comme de la pourriture – car aller chercher des détails de vie personnelle et les critiquer dans un "journal" à scandale, c'est une invitation aux haters à sévir et faire son beurre là dessus c'est moche.

Audacieux ? Sûrement, mais si elle avait fait ça, ça serait son dernier album et il n'aurait jamais vu le jour 😂 Si on s'attaque trop fort à certaines personnes, sa carrière, aussi internationale soit elle, peut être réduite en poussière en un instant. Je crois qu'elle le sait.

Tu as bien raison néanmoins, c'est paradoxal, mais c'est aussi une nécessité car donner directement ses faiblesses, c'est aussi s'exposer de trop. Et puis c'est Ariana Grande, le but ce n'est pas le militantisme. J'apprécie déjà ce qu'elle a pu faire.

Si carrément, c'est un mantra, mais Hakuna Matata c'est une chanson géniale et qui redonne le sourire et c'est une étape importante dans la vie de Simba pour son combat final. Donc Ariana fait déjà une première étape et elle est peut-être sur les traces de Simba pour affronter Scar, qui sait 😉

C'est tellement un mantra qu'un couplet de la chanson est dite de manière presque chuchotée, comme si on entendait une voix intérieure. Elle demande même "mais pourquoi s'intéresser à qui je chevauche [le soir] ?", autrement dit pourquoi il y a un article sur chaque homme qu'elle rencontre. Ces paroles assez explicites ont été cachées dans ce couplet pour que, à l'écoute, ça ne soit pas gênant. Si au début je trouvais ça osé, à la réflexion c'est assez bien joué.
